Cobh Minor Hurlers Defeat Whitescross

An easy win for Cobh minors, but difficult to describe the game as good for Hurling in Whites Cross or in Cobh. Intelligent teamwork, and superior skills saw Cobh build an early lead, and as a contest game was over early. The result was not really in doubt from the moment mid way through the first half, when a Whites Cross player received a straight Red for a strike to a Cobh Helmet. By half time Cobh were ahead 3-14 to 0-1. The Cobh team had been reshuffled early on, in order to share the play, and this continued at half time. Highlights from a Cobh point of view were the scoring displays by full back Jeff McCarthy (0-3) who became an immediate threat, and scored within seconds of moving from the full back line back to corner forward, and centre back David O’Connor (0-4), including 3 almost identical long range second half points, hit on the run, from the side line  just in front of the opposition dugout. By the end 12 players had scored for Cobh, which must be  close to a record, and it shows the strength in depth, across this small group of players. We also got the opportunity to build some potential cover for the goalkeeper position, with regular keeper John Gardiner moving outfield for the second half and scoring 1-1.

Full list of scorers as follows. Niall Spriggs 1-4, Ciaran Leahy and Odhran Kidney-Power 1-2 each, Adam O’Donovan and John Gardiner 1-1 each, David O’Connor 0-4, Keith Donachie 1-0, Jeff McCarthy 0-3, Padi Kearney, Killian Histon, Dom Roche, and Aaron Dolan 0-1 each.

For this group of players attention switches to Football next Thursday 16th with an away trip to Lisgould, followed by another trip to Lee Gaels (Dripsey) on Monday 20th . Then its back to Hurling, with an away trip to Crosshaven scheduled on Friday 24th. We then expect to have two home games, Thursday 30th Hurling v Lee Gaels, and Thursday 7th May Football v Tracton . These games will complete the early part of our season with a scheduled break in the main U18 program of games, due to Leaving and Junior Certificate exams.

This year we also expect (depending on player numbers) to enter the “non exam” Hurling and Football leagues which are intended for  Transition year and 5th Year students. These leagues will run through May, and up until late June when the full U18 program of League and Championship games will recommence. U18 Hurling League games will recommence on 25th June. U18 Hurling championship is expected on Wed July 8th in Cobh again against Whitescross, with U18 Football championship scheduled to start 2 weeks later (July 22nd) with yet another away trip to Castlelyons.
