Johnny Leahy Blitz
One of the big events on the underage calendar of Cobh Gaa went off very efficiently on Saturday 5th of September. The Johnny Leahy hurling blitz has now been running for close to twenty years and has seen many great players take part since Cobh’s own Derek Barrett participated in the very first one. Over the years there has been a transition from the grandchildren of Johnny playing in the blitz, on to his great grandchildren, four of whom took part in this years competition, Ciarán Leahy, Pádi and Diarmuid Kearney and Tara Looney. Cobh, Aghada, Carrigtwohill and Kiltha Óg played off in the U11 tournament with Aghada coming out on top, while Glen Rovers, Sarsfields, Tracton and Cobh crossed hurleys in the U8 section, with the Glen beating Cobh in the final with a last minute goal. The standard of hurling on view in both sections was very impressive and bodes well for the future of the game in all of the participating clubs. Refreshments were provided for all the visitors to Páirc Uí Chonaill, with tea and coffee being made by the club volunteers and the parents of the Cobh players supplying enough food to satisfy everyone. The club would like to thank all parents and players for their support and congratulate all who helped to organise the blitz so well.
