Cobh Gaa Remembers
the achievements of 1959 Junior Hurling Team and honour Hall of Fame recipient
Eddie Foley at the Annual Dinner Dance
A big crowd gathered
at The Commodore Hotel in Cobh on Friday 6th of February at the Cobh
Gaa Dinner Dance. This year coincided with the fiftieth anniversary of Cobh
winning the County Junior hurling championship and the remaining members of
that squad were invited along as guests of honour by the club. The men from the
1959 team were delighted with the reception they got and team captain Tom Hayes
spoke on behalf of the group.
Awards were presented
on the night to Alan Stack (Young Player of the Year), Don Ryan (Junior Hurler
of the Year), Tom Hayes (Administrators
Award), Brendan Meaney (Footballer of the Year) and Liam Greaney (Intermediate
Hurler of the Year).
The Clubman of the
Year Award went to Pete Drumgoole for his contribution to fundraising efforts
in the club and in particular for ensuring that the floodlighting of the clubs’
second pitch was completed. Vincent O’ Rourke accepted this award on Pete’s
behalf as Pete is currently working in New Jersey.
The final award of the
night was for the Hall of Fame, and club President Dave Coughlan presented
this, to long time supporter of the Gaa in Cobh Mr. Eddie Foley. Eddie has been
active with the Cobh club since he moved to the town in the early 1950’s. He
was involved when the club purchased their grounds at Carrignafoy where Páirc
Uí Chonaill now stands and he was also involved when the club opened their
pavilion in 1975. Eddie’s lifetime of service to the Gaa was greatly
appreciated and he received a standing ovation when he got up to accept the
Hall of Fame Award.
Those in attendance
danced their way into the early hours of the morning to the sound of the Ian Hendricks
Band and a great night was had by all.
