Family Fun Car Treasure Hunt
The Juvenile club would like to thank all who came out in force last Friday evening in the car treasure hunt. Well done to Liam Spriggs for all his hard work in the organisation of this increasingly popular event. Droves of people were to be seen leaving the club house in search of the all important clues. Thanks also to all at the Marlogue Inn, Inside Cobh, the hardworking juvenile club under Christy Buckley and Veronica Kelleher who presented the prizes sponsored by Francis C. Kelleher & Co. A huge thank you for making it possible.

Dinner Dance

A most enjoyable night was had by all last Friday evening for the GAA dinner dance in the Commodore Hotel. The centrepiece of this night was the awards presentation and presentation on our own club. This was kept a closely guarded secret til the appointed time and all were surprised and delighted by the final product. Well done and thank you to Vincie O’Rourke for his hard work. The members and players of the club selected the award winners from a list of nominees at the end of last year. The recipients were as follows: Administrator’s award Jim Cronin who also recited a poem which was both informative as well as entertaining,

Young Player of the year Walden Drake

Junior Hurler of the year John O’Connor

Clubman of the year Brendan Kearney

Footballer of the year Brian Aherne

Intermediate Hurler of the year Derek Barrett

Hall of fame award Sean Butler.

Our master of ceremonies for the evening was Mr. Pat Looney who carried out his duties with typical thoroughness and composure. Pat alongside Brendan Meaney have been the driving force behind this event which is going from strength to strength. Thanks for a great night lads. Rob Fitzpatrick of the Commodore Hotel was extremely professional and helpful in his preparation for the night. Thanks to Rob and the staff.

Thank you to all who provided spot prizes on the night for the raffle including the Commodore Hotel for organising 2 weekends away in Cavan and Lismore, Ger Curley, Roisin Drumgoole Bangor, Co. Down who provided a beautiful Valentine’s cake that made the journey south, Lorraine McKiernan Envy hair salon, club main sponsor Paul Halloran, Ryan’s Bar and guests who donated numerous spot prizes on the night. Photos from the dinner dance can be found on the club website www.cobhgaa.com. In addition, photographers from the Evening Echo, East Cork Journal and the Southern Star were present so keep an eye out for shots appearing in those publications. Finally, the dvd presentation shown on the night will be made available shortly for anyone interested. Contact Pat Looney 0864089331.

East Cork 14 'A' football final: Cobh 3-9 Midleton 1-10. Wednesday August 8th.

The young footballers from Cobh pulled off the biggest upset of the Gaa year by beating a much fancied Midleton side in the East Cork final at Carrigtohill on Thursday last. Taking the field minus four of their star performers, Kevin McSweeney, Joe Moynihan, Paul Buckley and Aidan O’ Rourke and also without team coach Brian McSweeney and facing a side who had beaten them well in last years u13 final, few people outside the Cobh camp would have given the young ‘forties’ a chance.

Predictions were turned on their head, however, as Cobh led by team captain Ian Aherne tore into Midleton from the off and with Peter Nolan tackling ferociously and setting the tone for the rest of the boys, the far bigger Midleton boys were thrown off stride immediately. Shane Hallahan opened the scoring for Cobh with two fine points and Chris Moynihan chipped in with a beauty from what seemed to be an impossible angle as each Cobh player stood up to the challenge and more than matched their opponents. At half time Cobh led on a scoreline of 1-5 to 0-5 but faced into the breeze and the sun in the second half, the Cobh goal coming from the boot of Peter Nolan.

The defence stayed solid throughout the second period with Derek Keaney an impassable colossus at full back, ably assisted by the tight marking Mark Ronan and Darragh O’ Keeffe, the excellent clearances of Jason Abbott and a very safe and cool Edward Walsh in goal.  Eoin Hastings produced a typical piece of magic as he broke through and blasted to the net early on for a very important goal which gave Cobh a lead which could be defended.

A feature of the second half was the speed of the Cobh counter attacks with Cian Spriggs, Tony O’ Donovan and Adrian O’ Hanlon carrying the ball up field very well. Alan O’ Flynn (who had stayed back to play the game before joining his family on holiday in Kerry) made some powerful runs into the heart of the Midleton defence and was terribly unlucky to see his thunderous shot rebound off the cross bar for what would surely have been the goal of any season. The defensive work of Jamie Moynihan was also crucial in the second half and his block downs were instumental in breaking up several of the Midleton attacks.

With three minutes to go Cobh were defending a slender two point lead when Daniel Keating pounced to get a match winning goal and Cian Spriggs followed this with an inspirational point which finally ended the Midleton challenge and saw the young boys from Cobh justifiably crowned the kingpins of East Cork.

Team. Edward Walsh, Mark Ronan, Derek Keaney, Darragh O’ Keeffe, Ian Aherne, Cian Spriggs, Jason Abbott, Jamie Moynihan, Alan O’ Flynn, Adrian O’ Hanlon, Peter Nolan, Shane Hallahan, Eoin Hastings, Daniel Keating, Chris Moynihan.

Subs: Tony O’ Donovan, Conor McLoughlin, John Flanagan.

Saturday November 3rd saw a large field take to the roads for a 10k run in aid of Marymount Hopice, Cobh Community Hospital and the GAA club. Blessed with ideal weather conditions, some walked some jogged and some ran their way around the island from the club down Ballywilliam, along the Tay Road left at the ferry junction, along the High Road, left by Wharton’s shop along the Lake Road onto the Laundry Hill. Right into top of the Hill and back up Bishop Street to the club.

Brian Ahern came home first in an excellent time of 38:47. David Byrne and Cian Shealey were second and third respectively. In the ladies section, Elizabeth Jane Anderson came home first followed by Siobhan Looney and Mairead Kearney. In some very creditable times, the top 30 runners finished inside the hour mark with many finishing under 50 minutes. As was mentioned on the day, thanks to the many stewards for their work. Thanks also to the well wishers giving encouragement when the going was tough and the girls at halfway giving out water. Rest assured that was much appreciated! Thanks also to Cobh Gardai who were very helpful on the day.

Special word of thanks again to all who helped out in any way on the day itself especially Cobh First Responders, Red Cross, Cobh Gardai and all the stewards. The fundraising committee of Peter Drumgoole, Vincent O’Rourke, Brendan Meaney, Bill Brannigan, Pat Looney and Declan O’Connell would also like to thank all the participants for their excellent efforts on the day.

Final monies raised for charity totalled to €3,750. Ms Valerie Cogan, accepting the cheque on behalf of Marymount, pointed out that this donation, made possible by all those who took part, will go towards a planned extension to their facility which does such important work to ease the suffering of cancer patients. She thanked most sincerely all the participants and those who contributed.

Long Puck

Yet another bright dry spell was granted to those participating in this year’s long puck along the traditional route.  Boys, girls, young and old took to the roads early that morning in teams of three to test their skills with hurley and sliothar and raise funds of over €1,000 each for the Midleton Branch of Suicide Ireland and the Cobh Branch of the Irish Red Cross. Yet again, the man behind it all was Patsy Ronan who has now been running this event for 17 years and which has gone from strength to strength. Well done Patsy. Thanks also to the Riordan family who put forward a new shield this year continuing the memory of Seamus O’Riordan and his contribution to the club in Cobh. John O’Keeffe and the bar staff also worked hard throughout the day, thanks lads. Councillor Paddy Whitty, Mayor of Cobh addressed the crowd and presented the trophies. Finally thanks to Vincent O’Rourke who organised a raffle on behalf of the fundraising committee of Cobh GAA Club.

Cobh Christmas Showcase
The Social Committee of Cobh G.A.A. Club in partnership with Cobh and Harbour Chamber of Commerce would sincerely like to thank everyone who contributed to making the COBH CHRISTMAS SHOWCASE such a wonderful success.

We are extremely grateful to the local business community who generously supported us in an effort to promote Cobh as a shopping venue. The number of retail outlets and fashion houses who took part in the event are too numerous to mention individually but it is important to note that there was a wide representation from all sectors of the retail trade. We greatly appreciate the fact that each retailer donated their Christmas Gift to be either auctioned or raffled on the night.

This gesture greatly increased the amount of money we were able to raise for two local organisations, namely COBH HOSPITAL and the PARK ROAD CENTRE. We would like to thank the Cental Committee of Cobh G.A.A. Club for the use of the Club’s facilities, St. Joseph’s National School and Colaiste Muire for providing the podium and screens, the beautiful models from Illusive Natural Health & Grooming who played such an integral role in this new venture for Cobh.

An event of this magnitude requires a great deal of planning and co-ordination and none of this would have happened if it wasn’t for the enthusiasm and efforts of Claire Cullinane who presented the evening with such panache and style and brought everything together with such ease. Lastly we would like to thank everyone who provided sponsorship, attended the event, bought tickets, provided raffle prizes, or contributed in any way to making this event a night to remember - our combined efforts raised €5000 which was divided and presented to Sinead Motherway and Sr. Eleanor in acknowledgement of the tremendous work which they and their teams provide on an ongoing basis in both COBH HOSPITAL and the PARK ROAD CENTRE.

We would like to appeal to the people of Cobh to shop locally this Christmas and support the business community who provide employment, high quality merchandise and are the backbone of our town.

We also extend our thanks to the staff and management of Garvey’s Super Valu and Keating’s Londis who were most accommodating on both days last weekend.  A final thank you to the players, members and supporters of Cobh GAA who were out in force in different locations and all kinds of weather to collect for the club and especially to Pette Drumgoole and Vincent O’Rourke who organised the flag weekend. The funds raised are being put to use in providing sporting facilities for the people of the Great Island.
