Cobh captain Darragh Kelleher and O' Tooles capt Luke Smyth           Cobh U-11 after their win in the blitz

with referee Tadhg Kelleher.

Cobh Blitz
Cobh held the U-11 and U-13 Blitz last weekend where O' Tooles from Dublin were paying a return visit after Cobh's visit to Dublin last June . Nemo Rangers also took part.  In the U-11 Cobh made it a really good weekend when they had wins over Nemo and O'Tooles in the group matches to qualify for the Final. In the final Cobh again played O'Tooles winning out by 2 points in a very close match. Great performances over the three matches from Shane Collimore, Patrick Fingleton ,Dean Cronin, Kevin Hayes, Stephen Coffey  Jordan Griffin and Darragh Kelleher
In the u-13  Cobh and O Tooles played a Football and Hurling match. O Tooles were much stronger in the football winning well but in the hurling Cobh turned the tables and put in a very solid performance to win by  3 goals. Overall victory betweeen the two games went to O Tooles.

Johnny Leahy Blitz 2007

The Cobh GAA club held their annual hurling blitz at Under 7 and Under 10 age groups on Saturday 1st Sept. The weather was very kind to us and the hurling displayed by both age groups was excellent.

In the Under 7 section Cobh played a very determined Ballinacurra side in a two legged competition. Cobh were victorious in the first game winning by a scoreline of 4 goals to no score. In the second game Ballinacurra needed to win by 5 goals to claim the trophy. A lot of pressure was put on the Cobh backs throughout the game but only for some brilliant defending by Charlie Rassmusen, Aaron Dolan, Conor Kelly and Jack McCormack, Ballinacurra managed to score only one goal which saw Cobh Capt and great-grandson of the late Johnny Leahy, Díarmuid Kearney lift the Cup. Other players of note on the day were Keelin Ryan, Jamie Bates, Luke O’Callaghan, Jack O’Donovan, Shane Kidney and Christan Delaney.

Kevin Murphy picked up the player of the week trophy for his displays in both games.

Like any team game you need a panel of players. To those that haven’t been mentioned including subs when introduced contributed greatly to this victory. Well done lads.

In the Under 10 section the calibre of teams in opposition to Cobh was high. Cobh had two Captains for the day, Ciarán Leahy and Pádi Kearney both great-grandsons of Johnny Leahy. The first game saw Cobh against Cloyne in a very high tempo game which carried with it some excellent scores and skills on show. Cobh won this game on a scoreline of

5-2 to 4-2.

To stay in the competition Cloyne need to beat a strong St Catherines team which they did. St Catherines were the next test for Cobh with Cobh winning by a single point and a final meeting with Cloyne who were out for revenge for two defeats in two weeks by the Cobh outfit. Cloyne began stronger and had a 2-1 to no score lead before Cobh registered their first score. Cloyne were to hold that cushion to the final whistle and won on a scoreline of Cloyne 4-2 Cobh 1-4. It’s hard to single out players for special mention especially when this panel of twenty four players gave commitment and effort of the highest order over the three matches. The heart, fight and never give up attitude shown by all was heartening to experience, a credit to family, Club and town.

The Club would like to thank the teams of Ballinacurra, Cloyne and St Catherines for making the day a great success and providing us with exceptional hurling. The Leahy family for continued support of the Blitz. Sean Leahy for presenting trophies and medals. Milipore Ire for their sponsorship of this competition. Club members -  Willie Donovan for sorting teams to compete. Those who helped out in any way during the day, the tea ladies – Pauline, Mairead, Jacinta and Martha. Leo Dempsey and John McCarthy for keeping things running smoothly outside the field.

Inside the field, Eoin Wilson and Conor McDowall our two referees – a job well done.

MC Jimmy Cronin for “the voice” on the mic. Pat Srn and Jnr for keeping an overall eye on proceedings. U7 & 10 Coaches Willie Donovan, Liam Spriggs, Liam Leahy, Denis Field, Ted Roche and Brendan Kearney. To anyone that hasn’t been mentioned thank you.

To parents and families of our players, thank you. Without your support, your kids and we as a Club would not get as much enjoyment out of our games as we do.
