Intermediate & Junior hurling Intermediate Hurling: Championship 2008
Cobh v Delaney's Sunday May 4th in Caherlag Cobh qualified for round 3 of the intermediate hurling championship with a 5 point win over Dublin Hill side Delaney’s. Taking the game to the opposition from the start Derek Barrett recovered a one point deficit with the first of 4 points. Goals followed from Alan Stack, probably players choice of man of the match and Peter Meaney to leave Cobh in command. The defence dealt well with the Delaney’s attack with a goal coming late in the first half to give some hope to the opposition. However, Brian Aherne and Stephen Kearney chipped in with a point each from play to leave the half time score at 2-7 to 1-7. Cobh v Eire Og Friday June 20th in Pairc Ui RInn Cobh never seemed to get into gear against Eire Og last Friday night in Pairc Ui Rinn despite some very good recent league performances. Dominating the first half, Cobh could not convert their opportunities and had amassed a large wides total by the break of play. It was Eire Og who upped their game in the second half and eliminated Cobh’s scoring threat to run out 4 point winners in a game Cobh will be bitterly disappointed to have lost.
Aghada v Cobh Thursday March 20th in Rostellan A dominant first half performance from Cobh failed to put enough distance between ourselves and hosts Aghada in Rostellan last Thursday evening under lights. The wind played a dominant part in the game but Aghada were far more clinical in converting their chances to leave daylight between the sides. Pat Sloane and Martin O’Connor were best for Cobh.
Cobh v Eire Og Thursday April 3rd in Pairc Ui Chonaill The intermediate hurlers got their O Murchu Cup campaign off to an encouraging start with a five point win over visitors Eire Og from Ovens last Thursday evening. Pat Sloane gave a tremendous contribution of 1-6 and there were also good performances from Dave Meaney at midfield, Eoin Wilson, Liam Greaney, Martin O’Connor and Terry Anderson. St. Finbarr's v Cobh Saturday April 5th in Togher Two days after their first cup outing, Cobh hurlers travelled to Togher for a meeting with St. Finbarr’s. Losing out by a goal in the end, Cobh will be disappointed with the chances missed in the opening half and will feel they were the better side. Unfortunately this wasn’t registered on the scoreboard but are still in the running for qualification from the group with one game remaining against St. Vincent’s. Best for Cobh on the day were Dave McCarthy, Alan Stack, Ciaran Jackson, Dave Meaney and Trevor Byrne. St. Vincent's v Cobh Tuesday April 22nd in Knocknaheeny Cobh travelled to the Northside of the city for a meeting with St. Vincent’s. Cobh had their chance to qualify for the next round of this competition with a win but it wasn’t to be on this occasion. The home side started the brighter with some pointed frees but as the half wore on Cobh found the back of the net through Brian Aherne and Pat Sloane converted some frees to leave the halftime score 0-10 to 1-5 in favour of St. Vincent’s.
Cobh v Milford Sunday May 25th in Pairc Ui Chonaill An outstanding first half display left Cobh in a commanding 1-11 to 0-3 lead at half time having played with the stiff breeze in Pairc Ui Chonaill. The back division and goalkeeper Pat Looney were dominant throughout first to the ball and delivering to the forwards who got into their rhythm as the half wore on. A goal from man of the match Pat Sloane was added to by a brace of points both from frees and play. Steve Kearney and Brendan Meaney also contributed the first of their scores in the opening half. Alan Stack and Brian Aherne were also showing well and making good use of the ball. Valley Rovers v Cobh Wednesday May 28th in Innishannon Cobh’s intermediate hurlers made it three wins in a row with a battling performance away to Innishannon outfit Valley Rovers. Leading by 1-6 to 0-5 at half time with 1-1 from Brendan Meaney and the first of 3 Eoin Wilson points, Cobh took to the field for the second half and brought the game to the home side. Pat Sloane took a fine goal chance that came his way shooting low to the left corner. The half back line once again proved strong with Walden Drake, Derek Barrett and Liam Greaney defending solidly and Terry Anderson gave a man of the match performance at full back. Despite conceding a goal with more than 10 minutes remaining and resisting the home side’s onslaughts, Cobh dug deep to take the points from last year’s intermediate league champions. Carrigaline v Cobh Wednesday June 4th in Carrigaline Cobh lost out to South east side Carrigaline in a tough hour’s hurling in Carrigaline last Wednesday. It was level at half time 1-6 to 0-9 and in an extremely physical second half Pat Sloane, Alan Stack and Jer Meaney were on target for Cobh’s goals. However it wasn’t enough to take a third successive set of league points as Cobh prepare for championship action in round 3 on June 20th.
